Employment Information: Become a Philmont Staff Member!

I, Phil Romans, and not Philmont Scout Ranch provide this information. I have gathered this from past experience and Philmont does not confirm nor deny any of it. From what I have gathered though, it is the most accurate I have available to me. If you have information that is different that listed here, please let me know.

For all those interested in trying for a job at Philmont. There are three ways to approach this:

1.) Call and ask for information. Call the following number and ask for an application for summer employment. There are three seasons at Philmont in which they hire staff.

(505) 376-2281

2.) Write to Philmont and ask. A solid but short letter including your intentions about applying for staff would be appropriate. There is no need to send resumes at this time. Fill out the form when you get it and include what ever you feel you must.

The other way inside of writing to Philmont is to fill out a staff Application:
Staff application- From www.philmont.com site, be sure to use the Adobe Acrobat reader

3.) E-mail Philmont: philstaff@philmontscoutranch.org (include the same information from 2)

About applying.

  • When you receive the application there will be several parts to it. One is getting the references sent in. Nothing personal, but do make sure they get set out to Philmont because they are important.
  • It is important to include any hobbies or items that might make it easier to fit you to a job. If you have a special interest and work with black-powder rifles, include it in your application with resume hints. One of your references might want to be someone that you have worked for in that specialized area or helped out previously.
  • Be sure to include everything you can. Philmont gets and handles enough applications, but not everyone has the same strength for certain jobs. It is your job to get noticed and provide as much incentive for Philmont to hire you as possible.
  • Finally, it is never too late to apply. (update 8/20/04, Philmont hired people in July for the rest of the summer!) It is not uncommon for Philmont to still be calling around in the first two weeks of the camping season trying to fill positions. People back out of their contracts due to other reasons and Philmont must fill those positions once thought filled. So, never think of yourself as being too late!

(update: 3/16/02)
I was attending a Philmont Staff Association reunion in Virginia and Mark Anderson (Camp Director of Philmont) was there talking about various Philmont related issues. One of which was hiring. He said consider this: in 2001 Philmont had about 1,300 applications for employment. Philmont had 930 positions and sent out contracts. Out of the 930 people offered contracts, 400 turned them down, which left the remaining people who applied to received job offers. This happens just about ever year like this!

Feel free to e-mail me with any other questions about positions or concerns. Or you could call Philmont and talk to Seasonal Employment. Always call and ask what is up... worst case is that they tell you there are no openings. Best case, they find that they need someone and because you showed extra interest they have a place for you.
